How Did Briana Brooks and Jeronta Brown Die?

Briana Brooks, a Florida native, was in a relationship with Jeronta Cleon Brown, a Georgia native, at the time of the incident.

She was taken to Grady Hospital where her unborn baby was delivered two months early. They also set out to determine why Reddick would have been targeted in the first place. The two victims’ families felt that the local authorities could have responded quicker or listened to their pleas to go after Briana and Jeronta after the kidnap, but alas, it was already too late.

And it all began sometime after midnight on August 30, 2014, when Briana, Jeronta, their daughter, and Jeronta’s 14-year-old sister returned from a late-night Wendy’s food run.

As they were getting out of the car, they were confronted by two men in all black wearing masks. He reported getting a disturbing voicemail at 12:56 a.m.

Bradshaw’s airtight alibi cleared him from suspicion. The call from the blocked number the night of the murders was from a burner phone.

Investigators sorted through a week’s worth of calls. Before being taken off life support, her organs were donated to help others.

“I had to do this for her because that’s what she wanted,” said her mother, Sadria Strong.

Brooks died days later.

Brown and Brooks were the parents of two other young children at the time of their deaths. Furthermore, Jeronta’s sister admitted he’d initially gotten away from the assailants but returned when he noticed his partner, the mother of his children, wasn’t with him.

In the hours that followed, the family received multiple calls for ransom, with the strange men demanding $150,000 for Briana and Jeronta’s release.

Briana Brooks and her partner, Jeronta Brown, were forcibly taken, only to eventually end up murdered. “The investigation ultimately revealed that Briana and Jeranta were not the intended objectives of these masked gunmen,” said Rucker. She was “not interested whatsoever in cooperating with the police,” he said. Brown
was already dead while Brooks was unconscious but still gasping for air.

“Calvin admitted to us that he had received a $37,000 Social Security settlement,” said Zimbrick. Andre had been released from prison on parole earlier in 2013 after serving more than two decades for the November 1990 double homicide of 39-year-old Cathy Dozier and 17-month-old Michael Broughton.

When Reddick handed the phone to police, the caller hung up.

“That was last time that there is any communication to the family from the victims or the kidnappers themselves,” said Brett Zimbrick, a former detective with the Atlanta Police Department.

Reddick had seen the assailants drive away in a light-colored van. Fathead was identified as Richard Wilson, who’d also been convicted of murder.

They demanded $150,000 for the pair’s safe return.
