As well as picking up clues from psychologists and scientists, John had the opportunity to meet celebrities and extraordinary people who talked about their experiences of dealing with their own sexuality. It was written. If exploring this issue can bring comfort to some of these young people, then I think the programme will have done a really wonderful thing.

He added: "If I was in a nude scene, completely naked, and if somebody walked on set, which they weren't supposed to, I might just do something like that [jiggles] and it was nothing outrageous.

No charges were brought against him but a public backlash meant he lost his job as a judge on Dancing On Ice and was forced to cancel an upcoming UK tour.

John said in a statement in 2021: "My high-spirited behaviour which was only ever intended in good humour to entertain colleagues on set and back stage has been well-documented, including in my autobiographies and even in song.

"There were a couple of times during filming where I'd resort to tomfoolery, but none of this was ever intended nor interpreted as being sexual in nature.

"With the benefit of hindsight, I understand that upset may have been caused by my exuberant behaviour and I have apologised for this previously.

And, as an actor, that’s what I do.”

“However I made myself feel comfortable, however wrong you think it was, at that time I was making myself feel comfortable in the situations that I was standing naked or doing whatever.”

“It’s hard to talk about because it upsets me and I get upset and still a little bit depressed when I sit and think about and hear about all the stuff people say about certain things in our community and I’m like, ‘I could help, I could do stuff!’ But nobody wants to touch me.”

“I’m not asking for sympathy from anybody,” he concluded.

But, for crying out loud, everybody was on the queer spectrum there."

In a candid piece penned for The Guardian in 2008, John opened up about growing up in midwest America in the 1980s - where he remembered homosexuality being treated "like a curse".

John Barrowman has faced multiple allegations of misconduct throughout his career, with accusations of exposing his penis to fellow cast members on various occasions and across different shows.

“Now, the thing that upsets me the most is they tried to make it out that I was a sexual predator.”

The negative press, Barrowman noted, lasted for two years and had a serious impact on his mental health, causing him to seek therapy and go on antidepressants.

“I contemplated taking my own life a couple of times,” he said. There were a couple of times during filming where I’d resort to tomfoolery, but none of this was ever intended nor interpreted as being sexual in nature.”  Adding, “I have apologised for this previously.”

After three years, Barrowman’s return to our TV screens is short-lived after he was announced as a cast member of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins 2024.

“It makes me sad because a lot of people who have attacked me are the people that I fought for to allow them to have a voice.”

He called the reports about him in the media and online “a veiled homophobic attack” and said, without naming any names, that certain people had been out to get him.

“They could not get me any other way but, ‘Oh, let’s get him because we’ve heard stories that he flashed and did certain stupid things on set,'” he said.

Roughly 2-3 hours into filming, Barrowman quit the show after seeing their living quarters according to one of his cast mates. Ever. The show has been known to be physically demanding due to its military-style training. “Because of the time, and it was children’s television, so you could lose your job. For as long as he has been aware of his sexuality, John has been convinced that he was born gay and firmly believes that homosexuality is not a choice.

Who producer Russell T Davies, who didn’t come to his defense when he needed the most.

“I’m most disappointed in the way my colleagues in the industry didn’t speak up, did not step forward and say ‘This is ridiculous. The thing was I couldn’t do it because of my family and friends.”

Right now, John says that he continues to work on himself, spending most of his time with husband Scott and his parents.

He met his now-husband Scott Gill back in 1991 and they declared their love for each other in a small civil service ceremony in 2006. Since my apology in November 2008, my understanding and behaviour have also changed. I didn't see it as outrageous. This is stupid.’ Listen, I’d never do it again.
