Today, Mount Gay produces the majority of Barbadian rum that is exported globally. These techniques gave the rum its distinctive character, with rich, complex flavors that set it apart from other spirits of the time. The Mount Gay Visitor Centre, located at the distillery, offers tours and tastings, allowing visitors to experience the brand’s history and craftsmanship firsthand.

Mount Gay Rum: Legacy and Impact

Today, Mount Gay is recognized as one of the world’s finest rum producers, with a legacy that spans over 300 years.

The pure coral filters the water and carries essential minerals that help produce the right environment for the molasses and yeast during fermentation.

The mixture of molasses and coral filtered water is fermented for around 72 hours using four proprietary yeast strains, depending on the still that will be used, all derived from the natural airborne yeast found around the distillery.

Though the distillery’s first Coffey still only dates to the 1970s, other column designs were added to the mix around the time of American Prohibition. Barbados does not have any lakes or rivers, but instead, the island sits on limestone bedrock with porous topsoil. Hundreds of years ago, Mount Gay could rely on the molasses from local sugar cane for all of its needs, but that’s no longer the case as there simply isn’t enough available land anymore.

And there’s a whole lot of rum aging in Mount Gay’s four warehouses.

Bottoms are blindfolded and positioned in a corral where the Tops are allowed to MOUNT freely.

Broncos of the western United States have been ‘Gathered’ into capture corrals for decades.
Mount continues the tradition seeking COWBOYS with stamina to mount and break the spirited broncos in the capture corral! Our 2 day gathering brings western US traditions into a shame-free, sex-positive roundup.


Guys must choose whether to participate as a COWBOY, BRONCO, or RANCH HAND for the entire event and agree to follow the Corral Code as guided by WRANGLERS.

The corral is closed outside of Mount hours, but the compound is open 24 hours. 

The corral will have windows blacked out, and the entrance covered, ensuring no broncs get spooked. Mount Gay is very transparent about its production process.

A spot called Mount Alleyne existed on the island at the time, so they settled on his middle name. Following his death in 1801, the company was renamed after him. A native Bajan, she studied Chemistry at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and also has an MBA. Following a five-year apprenticeship under Mount Gay’s previous master distiller, she took on her current role.

Its legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of rum itself, and the brand has become synonymous with quality, tradition, and craftsmanship.

Mount Gay Rum: Origins and Early History

The story of Mount Gay begins with the arrival of sugarcane in Barbados in the 17th century. So, although the distillery relies on sugarcane sourced from around the Caribbean, it only imports varieties that are native to Barbados.

One such variety in use is BT7782, which translates to bred in Barbados, selected for growth in Trinidad in 1977, and assigned the number 82 during research.

Stills matter.

The distillery currently features four different types of stills: small Spanish and Scottish pot stills, a Coffey column still, which was introduced in the 1970s, and the most recent addition, an Irish column still.

At Mount, a Corral Code governs our western style roundup as agreed upon rules that every COWBOY and BRONCO is trusted to abide by while inside the corral.


The Corral Code forms the basis for our event. The water drawn from this well is still used for the distillate and dilution.

Barbados is one of the most densely populated island nations in the world.

The rum became a favorite among sailors and traders, who carried it across the Atlantic and introduced it to new markets. The brand is rigorous on the quality control for their molasses.

The distillery and plantation grounds are home to a centuries-old, 300-plus-foot well. The brand also introduced limited-edition releases and special blends, further cementing its position as a leader in the premium rum category.
